EXETER SURF CLUB

The club was formed in 1993, initially to take over the organisation and running…Of the Tedzo surf classic, a memorial contest held for a pioneering Exeter Surfer Jeremy 'Tedzo' Connett, who's innovative surfboard company UNDERGROUND, helped the popularity of the sport in the Exeter area grow.
The committee was made up of friends of the afore mentioned…. Who wanted the contest to continue .The president of the club was the former surf shop owner Benge Bealy.

Dennis McCarthy was voted as chairman, Paul Clarke Secretary, and Kevin Tuckett the Treasurer…. Other committee members included myself,Dave Wotton ,Clive & Steve Jones, and Clive Pullyblank.
Since 93 other people have been drafted on to the committee…And at present the club committee stands as B.Bealy (president) D.McCarthy (Chairman) J.Holt (secretary) P.Clarke (treasurer & head contest organiser) D.Wotton, Clive Jones, Rob Dixie, Mark Tozer, Mr&Mrs G.Inger, Jason Smith,Mark Banfield and Jack Fenn make up the rest of the committee.

The Clubs headquarters are at 'The Welcome Inn' Haven Banks, and the committee meet their every Tuesday from the end of August to the contest date. Which is usually held the last
weekend of October.

To start with, back in '93' their were regular club meetings, at which many hours of discussion took place ,on What form the club should take, numerous good ideas were born from these meetings.
Ideas, such as regular inter club contests, a lift share Network to the beaches, Discounts for members at surf-shops, board makers and travel agents, B.S.A Affiliation & and third party insurance's for members, regular Club Newsletter to name but a few.

But I'm afraid the contest is still the main club activity, which has now run for over 12 years. The most significant change of recent years is to the format of the contest (which attracts more than 50 surfers of all ability's) is that it is a totally mobile surfing competition. That is to say the contest is run at the best location for the conditions on the contest Day.
In latter years it was predominantly held in the Bude area …and was singularly the biggest surf competition to be held there.

Clive Jones and Mark Banfield, Usually hold a film evening after the event…. At the Exeter gas club, showing the highlights of the contest.
